Brief description
If you have already tried your hand at creating finishing touches for hats, you may be ready to be more adventurous and actually change the shape and style of an existing hat. All you will need is this ebook and some ordinary household tools and equipment. Start by copying one of our designs, or branch out on your own straight away if you have the confidence – it’s very exciting what can be done. One of our re-worked hat designs uses a hat block, but if you don’t have one of these it’s easy to compromise and just keep the crown shape you started with. You’ll soon be running out of old hats to experiment on!

We use two old straw hats for our creations, but you can equally well work with felt, sinamay or stiffened fabric hats. If they are old anyway, then you have nothing to lose and lots to learn by cutting them up.

As with all our ebooks, every step is detailed for you with a photograph and descriptive text – you’ll find it really easy to follow, even if you have no previous experience.

This experiment didn’t make it into the ebook, but it admirably illustrates what could be done. This is another old and slightly faded, but good quality straw hat. Remove all the trimmings and any wire and start cutting!

And cut some more! A long, long spiral is being formed…

An intriguing little hat emerges!
