Vlasta Collu, a bridal designer, creates luxurious bespoke bridal gowns as well as tiaras and headdresses to complement the silhouette and achieve the desired look for a bride’s big day.
Art and design are my life long passion and I thrive when my clients push my creativity into extremes. I often look for inspiration in vintage fashion and past eras. My interest in headwear started when I was 11 – crochet and knitted hats, which were very popular presents amongst all my family and friends. Over the years I have developed my skills and knowledge in creating bespoke headwear pieces. My first commission for a bridal hat came in 2003 right after my business partner and I opened the bridal boutique. Today we have got a small sample collection of headdresses to choose from – for a bride, mother of the bride/groom or anybody really, who wants to dress up for an occasion.
Our bridal boutique is open by appointment only. This system allows me to dedicate all needed time to my clients. They can come and try pieces from our collection and have them made to order or take advantage of our bespoke millinery services.
While creating a bespoke design the venue, type of ceremony, season, time of day and colour theme is also taken in consideration. I will sketch ideas until the client feels we found the right design for her. We start with sketching an overall silhouette and then we build the headdress from the base up specifying all components as well as measurements and proportion.
Then the work can begin. Some headdresses need a fitting before completion to ensure everything is to the client’s satisfaction and the best is to try the headdress together with the intended outfit. Thus we can check the overall silhouette and if needed make adjustments to achieve that desired look.
